6PPD-quinone (6PPD-Q) is a transformation byproduct of 6PPD, an antioxidant added to nearly all vehicle tires to keep the rubber from cracking under ozone exposure. When tires wear down, they shed particles onto roadways; when 6PPD in those particles reacts with atmospheric ozone, it forms 6PPD-Q. Rain then washes tire-wear particles and this compound into streams and other waterways.
