The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) was passed in 1969 and signed into law on January 1, 1970. NEPA is a far-reaching law that applies to virtually all U.S. federal agencies and most activities that affect the environment. NEPA serves as the “umbrella” environmental regulation under which all other environmental regulations and compliance requirements are addressed. Many state, local, and private undertakings must be evaluated pursuant to NEPA if they receive federal funding, require federal permits, or would take place on federal land. This presentation will cover the basics, including the history of NEPA, purpose of NEPA, environmental documents necessary for compliance with NEPA, and various NEPA efforts within Idaho.

Presented by:

Chris Hampson, CEP

Environmental Protection Specialist—NEPA/ECP & Planning

Idaho Military Division, IDARNG
